Prevention / Outreach

AIDS Hotline - A local number is available with trained staff to answer most questions and provide referrals to appropriate services.

Condom Outreach - Condoms and other safer sex items are provided to Barbershops, Salons, Correctional Facilities, Bars and Clubs in the Wichita area targeting high risk individuals

Prison Pre-Release - PDI works in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Corrections to facilitate educational programs for inmates just prior to release. These classes deal with risky sexual behaviors, triggers and behavior modification. Presentations are currently held at the Hutchinson, Winfield, Larned, Norton, El Dorado, Ellsworth and Wichita Work Release facilities

Minority Outreach - PDI maintains the Minority Advisory Committee (MAC) to give guidance and directions for programs in the African American communities.

Park Outreach - PDI works with the Community Police and the Riverside Neighborhood Association to deliver a "safe community" message.

Public Presentations - PDI offers education to at risk groups and organizations endowing information adapted to fit the needs of the clientele.

Public Sex Environment Class - A five night class is offered to assist behavioral modification for men arrested in public parks and adult bookstores.

Public Sex Offenders Class - Two night classes are also held for women arrested in conjunction with prostitution charges and men arrested for purposes of solicitation. This class educates on the risk of HIV and other STD’s as well as how to make safer choices.

HIV Testing - PDI staff are trained to provide both counseling and testing in a safe and confidential environment. Current advances in medical technology allow staff to screen for HIV in around 10 to 20 minutes. As a juxtaposition with testing, staff are also able to assess the clients needs and implement a strategy to change risky behaviors.
